Climate Action Niagara is continuing to work with neighbourhoods to develop community gardens, to lessen the impact of imported foods (both carbon and pesticides) and to ensure that the next generation is well grounded in food production on a personal scale. The opening event of our 2011 SUSTAINABILITY WORKSHOP Series presented the topic of: FOOD SECURITY – FARMLAND PROTECTION and THE GREENBELT (a speaker and film series for open discussion) held on Wednesday September 7th, 2011 6:30 - 8 p.m. St. Catharines Market Square, James and King Streets Featuring panel speakers from Greenbelt Alliance and Preservation of Agricultural Lands.
Discussion Questions included: Niagara’s Farmland: How do we protect it? What does the Greenbelt achieve? What is the soil capacity? How much land is needed? Which land should be protected? How can we improve linkages?
