Urban green spaces contribute to our social, psychological and physical health, for individuals and their communities. It has been common knowledge for years that trees provide an important service namely, the conversion of CO2 to oxygen. However, we are just beginning to realize other valuable offerings of our maintaining our urban forests.
As we assess the value of trees to our communities it is imperative that we include all aspects of the “return” that healthy urban forests provide including healthier children, skin cancer prevention, reduced crime, improved freshwater integrity, improved soil health, species diversity, and improved mental health.
Climate Action Niagara has been a leader in developing increased awareness of the importance of Urban Greening and has spearheaded effective initiatives:
- Piloted Boulevard Greenings fostering neighbourhood stewardship by canvassing residents to host free boulevard trees

- Partnered with City of St Catharines to host A Greener Tomorrow, with speakers & workshops
